Georgina. I have in the past been a contributor to the XFree86 Project,
albeit a small one, and have not been very active this last year, but in
all these matters and disputes, my heart has always been with the
XFree86 Project. Read this very mailing list archive to convince you of
that.
Now, it is my belief that this licence change is an error. That it will
bring nothing to the XFree86 Project, that it will only portray the
XFree86 Project as the bad guys, and will be counter productive in the
long run.
As said, i don't know the internal reason of why this happened, but i
can guess some. And since you like quotes, let me cite you another one,
one that was told me when refering to this (well from memory, so more or
less, but you will get the idea) :

And followed with discussion on how to use the freedesktop.org xlibs
instead of the xfree86 ones.
