The FSG was setup to fairly represent everyone in our community, including
both individuals and corporations. You can get all of the details from the
by-laws on the website (http://www.freestandards.org/), but in a nutshell,
there are a couple of different categories which exist, and a few rules to
ensure the categories remain in balance, and no one entity or group can
exert undue influence.
Workgroups there are accessible to everyone, and the amount of process that
is required is just enough to ensure things are being done properly, without
becoming so overwhelming that nothing can be accomplished. We had many people
with experience in different organizations contribute the establishment of
the FSG and it's proceedures, and I think we ended up with the best parts of
all of them.
I would like to see the X Standardization work move into the FSG. This should
be a combination of the existing groups, X.Org, XFree86, and freedesktop.org.
There is unfinished work in all three groups, which would be on the initial
TODO list. In some cases, it will be easier to finish the work by having
everyone in a single group, instead of split out into the existing, mostly
disjoint, groups.
